TO THE EDITOR OF SCIENCE,

AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS, may 25 2010.

With interest I noted the letter “Climate Change and the Integrity of Science”, may 7, 2010, signed by a community of workers who have put forward observations, theories and computer models in the field so-called “global warming”. These propositions over the last few years have led to rather far-reaching decision making in the realm of politics and economics and as such they are now manifest in the daily lives of the entire western civilization.

To start out: any climate theory or model that-at least in media-adressed explanations- omits the variable of water vapor greenhouse gas with its characteristic absorption in the infrared region and present 3 to 4 powers of 10 higher concentration in comparison to the trace gases carbon dioxide, methane, etc., evokes the suspicion being based on non-integer science.

Secondly I point to the circumstance that there is a considerable number of so-called “sceptics” mainly based on the previous remark or proposing an overruling influence of Sun-activity on earth climate. To name a few: physics Nobel Prize winner Ivar Giaever of Norway, the now late Joanne Simpson, the first female Ph.D in meteorology, astronaut Jack Schmitt and in several workers cited in the US Senate Minority Report 2008/2009. In august 2009 64 prominent workers in Germany wrote an open letter to chancelor Merkel to review her position the matter.

Now it is stated in the Science-letter of may 7 that the community fears “McCarthy-like” witch hunts in the event of their predictions based on their models and theories being wrong.. In my view this a rather preposterous suspicion considering the fact that one on equal footing can say that McCarthyist hunts already have taken place on the community of the “sceptics” in the sense of having extreme difficulty of getting their work published, tenures being granted and acquiring sufficient research funds.

It is highly likely that the number of “sceptics” is vastly larger but due to fear of precisely these McCarthy-like witch hunts in their faculties, they have to remain silent to protect their tenured positions and families.

One particular prominent politician repeatedly stated that the “sceptics” had to be allocated to sinister cults of people who still think the earth is flat or that they otherwise question the possibility of there ever having been a landing on the Moon. In my view, this type of despicable remarks characterize the level of the ungoing discussion and the highly politically biased opinion on the matter. As to the reasons why cited politician was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace(!), I am left in the dark.
